As we move into November, two meaningful occasions come together: National Family Caregivers Month and the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. At Golden Hearts Home Care, we believe it’s the perfect time to honor the everyday heroes, the family caregivers, and find ways to weave care, gratitude, and togetherness into the season.

Why November Matters
National Family Caregivers Month
Every November, National Family Caregivers Month acknowledges the millions of Americans who provide unpaid care to loved ones. These caregivers sacrifice time, energy, and often their own needs to support family members and they deserve recognition, support, and respite.
Thanksgiving: A Season of Gratitude
Thanksgiving is a time when families gather, reflect, and give thanks for one another. It invites moments of connection, kindness, and celebration — precisely the spirit we want to extend to caregivers and those they care for.
With Thanks and Compassion: Bringing Together Caregiving and Thanksgiving
Here are practical ideas to honor caregivers while making the holiday meaningful for everyone involved:
1. Include the Caregiver in the Holiday Planning
Invite the family caregiver to help plan the meal, decide décor or special touches. Their involvement helps them feel appreciated and part of the celebration.
Ask about the care-receiver’s comfort: Are they able to join the dinner easily? Would a modified schedule help accommodate rest or care routines?
2. Designate a “Gratitude Moment” for Caregiving
At the Thanksgiving table, invite everyone to share something they appreciate about the caregiver’s support or the care-receiver’s strengths.
Create a “care‐gratitude jar”: family members write short notes thanking the caregiver or care recipient, to be read aloud or kept private.
3. Make the Day Accessible for the Care-Receiver
Choose seating that allows easy access and mobility.
Plan the meal or event around the care recipient’s needs: rest times, medication schedules, etc.
Consider having a “quiet area” where the care recipient or caregiver can step away for a short break if needed.
4. Recognize the Caregiver’s Needs
Remind the caregiver: It’s okay to ask for help, take a break, or delegate tasks.
Provide a small “caregiver comfort station” — think favorite drink, comfy chair, or a moment of silence before dinner.
Encourage the caregiver to move around, stretch, take brief walks, and stay nourished during the festivities.
5. Extend the Celebration Into Service
After the meal, consider a joint activity: writing thank-you cards, volunteering together, or making small “care baskets” for nearby seniors or neighbors. This shifts the focus from only receiving to giving — a powerful way to engage both caregiver and care recipient.
Use the holiday to start a new annual tradition of “family care check-in”: schedule a quiet moment after Thanksgiving for the caregiver, family, and care recipient to openly talk about needs, plans, gratitude, and support for the coming months.
